Final Exam Study Guide, Make-Up Class

I know we haven’t used the blog since midterm, but that is okay. πŸ™‚ I wanted to use it now to create your study guide for the Final Exam, as well as to show you your make-up assignment.

  1. Please Click Here to access your study guide. To start, please also review the Midterm Exam study guide. The form of questions on the Final Exam is the same as the Midterm Exam.
    1. Your Final Exam is about everything that we have covered since the midterm test. That includes Units 4, 6, and 7 (pages 116 – 238).
    2. I know that’s a lot of information, but the final exam will be the same size as your midterm.
    3. I will answer all of your questions in class tomorrow morning.
  2. Please Click Here to access the make-up assignment. It is due before your final exam next week, and I will grade it based on completion. The make-up assignment is an extension of the study guide, and will help you prepare for the Final Exam.
    1. You will be able to complete the assignment using your textbook.
    2. You will be able to submit the assignment online.

If you have any questions — before, during, or after class — please send me an email: benj.taylor9@gmail.com.

Oct 14 Plan!

Good morning, everyone. This week in class, we will discuss Unit 3 in the textbook. We will also prepare for the midterm test by reviewing. I don’t expect the exam to be difficult or easy, but it will cover everything we’ve talked about in class. The test will focus on deciding which verb tenses to use in a particular situation, as well as finding the meaning in a piece of text — like a sentence or a paragraph.

More details about the midterm are here. <– Prof. Taylor has not added the link yet (7:50 AM, Tuesday.)

This week in class, we will look at these parts of Unit 3:

  • Pages 88 – 91 and chart 3.1 (Ex. 1 – 3);
  • Pages 92 – 94 and chart 3.2;
  • Pages 97 – 98 and chart 3.4 (Ex. 9 and 10);
  • Page 100, Ex. 11;
  • Pages 102 – 105, chart 3.6 (Ex. 14 and 15).

There will be a homework assignment from the textbook — it will help you prepare for the midterm and get also help you work with Unit 3. Have a good day!

Pinterest Assignment Example

Hello, Everyone —

I have just created an example for your second Pinterest assignment — “Grammar Assignment 2.0”. To see it, please click here.

As with the previous assignment, please title your board “Grammar Assignment 2.0” and copy my board description (“Grammar Assignment 2.0 — Example. In this board…”). This will help me identify and grade your assignment.

Review the “Help with Pinterest” page (made for Grammar Assignment 1) if you need extra help; then, email me if you need more help.

I mentioned this on Pinterest, but I want to mention it here, too. You should put your pins in order: first, second, third, and so on; Pinterest will order the pins backward, though (5, 4, 3, 2, 1), but that is okay.

Have a great weekend!

New Assignment

Hello, Everyone —

As I mentioned in class yesterday morning, next week, I will return your grade for the Chuseok Assignment and your homework from Unit 1. Here is a short assignment. It is due next week in class, October 7.

  • On Pinterest, please create a pin board with 5 pictures. Each picture should tell part of a story. Together, your pin board should tell a story, just like a comic book or web comic.(Remember our assignment from class, when you worked with your group to tell a story.) For each picture, write a one-sentence description using simple-present tense or present-continuous. I will create an example, and then post it here. Look for it later today. This assignment is worth 15 points.
  • In your textbook, please complete Exercise 8 on page 53, Exercise 11 on pages 59-60, and Exercise 19 on pages 73-74. This assignment is PARTICIPATION only. You may write in your textbook, and I will give you full credit for completing the assignment (10 points). You must only try. πŸ™‚

Please send me an email if you have any questions. I will post an example of the Pinterest assignment later today.

Chuseok Assignment

Here is your assignment; it is due on September 23. To complete this assignment, you must use the Pinterest account that we created in class. I demonstrated how to use Pinterest in class. This is a big assignment, I know. I will grade this assignment and it will make-up for missing classes, as we discussed in class.

If you have any questions or need any help, please email me. Here are your directions:

  1. You must create 3 pinboards.
  2. Title them “Grammar Assignment 1.1”, “Grammar Assignment 1.2”, and “Grammar Assignment 1.3”.
  3. In the description, COPY the information listed below. These are also your directions.
  4. Complete the assignments by following the directions below. The first one should be about things that you like (hobbies, interests, food, traveling, sports…); the second one should show actions and include a description; the third one should show actions and include a question using the present-continuous form.
  5. You can visit my page on Pinterest (click here) for examples.
  6. You can read this page (click here) for extra help in creating your pinboards.
  7. We will review this assignment in class on September 23. It is due on September 23, and I will not accept it late.

Here are the directions from #3:

Grammar Assignment 1.1: Create a pinboard with 15 pictures. Each picture should show something you like and have a one-sentence description.

Grammar Assignment 1.2: Create a pinboard with 10 pictures. Each picture must show an action – like a sport, a hobby, a job, or something else. Describe the picture in one or two sentences. In your description, use the present-continuous form (For example: “They are working.” “He is having fun.”) AND the simple-present tense (For example: “He is happy.” “It looks dangerous.”).

Grammar Assignment 1.3: Create a pinboard with 10 pictures. In the description, ask a question about each picture using the present-continuous form.

Plan — Details

So, we are going to be out of class for two weeks, due to the Chuseok Holiday and University Foundation Day. Since I do not want us to get behind, I am going to assign an out-of-class assignment. This will make-up for one of the days, and will keep us from having to have 2 make-up days at the end of the semester.

  • Complete your Pinterest page and connect it to Professor Taylor’s page. His username is: Ben4819. Go to pinterest.com/ben4819 and follow me!
  • Complete online assignment on GrammarDHU.wordpress.com.
    • Professor Taylor will detail the assignment after class – look for your assignment on SEPTEMBER 2 at GrammarDHU.wordpress.com; it is due on SEPTEMBER 23.
    • The assignment will NOT require you to use your textbook (Grammar in Context), so do not worry if you do not have the book now; but, please get the book before SEPTEMBER 23.

Welcome to Grammar Class!

Hello, Everyone!

This is one of the websites we will use for English Grammar II this semester. On this page, I will share updates about class — including online assignments, homework and quiz information, handouts, study guides, and other things. On the other website, you will complete some assignments, both in-class and out-of-class.

Since this is a three-hour class, we will be very busy every week! Expect to stay in class from 9:10 AM – 12:00 PM every week. So far, I have uploaded the course syllabus; click this link to view the course syllabus, or click on the link to the left. This week in class, we will:

  1. Discuss the course syllabus and introduce the class webpage;
  2. Discuss major course assignments;
  3. Create Pinterest log-ins and profiles;
  4. Discuss Pinterest and tour the website;
  5. Complete in-class assignment;
  6. Complete online assignment;
  7. Play Exquisite Corpse game;
  8. Discuss textbook and course schedule, considering Chuseok and University Foundation Day.

Next week (September 9), we will not be in class due to the Chuseok holiday. The following week (September 16), we will not be in class due to University Foundation Day. That means we will have to make-up two class. I will give you an online assignment to make up for one day, and it will be due on September 23); we will make-up the other day after midterm.

Later in class, I will give you details about the online assignment; briefly, though, the online assignment will involve a quiz and a an assignment on Pinterest. There will also be a reading assignment. This assignment will be MUCH bigger than most homework assignments, because it will make-up for missing one class period.

One more thing: I have not posted a course schedule yet, but I will before September 23. Please be sure to purchase your textbooks before that date (September 23) as well.
